I have personally used the King James Version for many years now, and it’s the only version I use for my Bible reading. For me, it is the most reliable Bible version to date and always will be. Unfortunately, I’ve seen many congregations alienate their members by promoting modern translations, thus ignoring the significance of those who founded the church. As long as I live, the KJV will remain my Bible because it aligns with the values and teachings that Jesus Christ wants to impart to us.
My personal conviction to use the KJV bible stems from these facts:
1. Textual Integrity
The KJV is translated from the Textus Receptus, a manuscript tradition trusted by the church for 2,000 years. It is miles away from the modern translations that stems from critical and eclectic text and are usually surrounded by controversies with regards to its origins and theological implications.
Here’s an example:
In Matthew 18:11
KJV – “For the Son of man is come to save the which is lost”
NIV – this verse have been removed.
2. Translation
The KJV bible uses formal equivalence, striving for a word-for-word translation. However, newer versions like the NIV or NLT employ a dynamic equivalence which focuses on thought-for-thought translation.
In simple sense, the KJV sticks closely to the exact words and structure of the original languages like Hebrew and Greek. Unlike the NIV which focuses on the overall idea behind the text. NIV readers claim that its easier to read however, it’s not literal.
Basically its like KJV copying exactly what someone says versus the NIV wherein you’re trying to explain what someone says meant in your own words and understanding.
3. Tone and Authority
Whenever you read the KJV, it’s like hearing a decree from God. For example phrases like “Thou shalt not” feels very serious and straightforward. The modern translations use everyday language which I think have less impact especially for verses where God is giving us instructions.
4. Easy to Read
Some people say the King James Bible is hard to read, but that assumes people can’t rise to the challenge of understanding it. I disagree. Simplifying the Bible to make it easier to read risks watering down its depth and meaning. Unlike any other book, the Bible is the Word of God—it deserves to be read with reverence and effort, not reduced to something overly casual.
5. Free from Copyright
Unlike modern translations, which are often copyrighted for profit, the KJV is in the public domain in the United States. This freedom aligns with the principle that God’s Word should be accessible to all, not commercialized.
My commitment to the KJV is unwavering, but I strive to maintain grace in my stance. While I may hold strong convictions about the Bible I use, I recognize the importance of treating others with respect and kindness, regardless of their preferences.
More and more people are rediscovering the richness of the KJV, and I hope this explanation inspires you to appreciate its timeless value.
